LEGO Marvel Super Heroes was originally released in 2013, and many great LEGO games have emerged since then, but it remains my favorite adventure game of all time. There's a clear difference between a game made with a lot of research and one made with real love, and LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is the latter: with so many references, inside jokes, and gestures to the camera, it's clear that this game is a labor of love for superfans. Like most Lego games, Marvel Super Heroes is best enjoyed through co-op, so it makes the journey more fun if you have friends to play with, but they'll have to be with you because there's no online multiplayer.

This is the first Lego game set in the Marvel Universe, bringing together hundreds of beloved Marvel superheroes and supervillains, including Iron Man, Wolverine, Hulk, Spider-Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Loki, and Deadpool. Following the gameplay style of previous Lego games, players can control 180 characters from the Marvel Universe and help save the Earth with a variety of cool superpowers, each with their own unique abilities:

◈ Iron Man: flies, hovers, fires missiles, and can also release a powerful single-beam laser from his chest.

◈ Spider-Man: fires spider webs, uses spider-sense to detect objects invisible to other characters, climbs walls; and, of course, can fly and swing with spider silk.

◈ Captain America: can throw his indestructible shield at objects and enemies, or jam it into walls to create padding, and can also use it to protect himself from harm.

◈ Hulk: smash!

Not all of them are unique, mind you - many of them are some combination of flying/invisibility/shapeshifting/lasers - but the combinations are nonetheless extremely fun to play around with. Play as "big" characters (like Hulk and Abomination) and pull off new power-ups, smashing through walls, throwing cars, and turning the world upside down with your super strength! You can even customize your character to create unique superpowers. My favorite character was Dark Phoenix because she can fly, set things on fire, use telekinesis, and control the minds of others; a close second was Squirrel Girl, who can summon armies of squirrels to tear people apart.

Players can also explore Marvel's version of New York City, but they can only use specific characters and visit buildings after the campaign is complete. Side missions are narrated by Deadpool and take place in buildings with their own storylines. There are 15 missions in the main single-player campaign, followed by 11 side missions. There are Stan Lees to rescue, characters to unlock, and Gold Bricks - the currency which lets you unlock special cheats and bonuses — scattered around the place. Players will need to chase Gold Bricks around, from throughout LEGO Manhattan to several key locations in the Marvel Universe, such as Stark Tower, Asteroid M, Hydra Base, and the X-Men school.

While it's enjoyable, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes has some annoying aspects, like the fact that you can't skip cutscenes and for some reason, the audio is very quiet. Even at full volume in both the options and on the Switch itself, it's much quieter than any other game I've played. But if you can avoid this little obstacle, I would recommend this game to you. Experience a thrilling and original storyline with the classic adventure and humor of Lego games!
