NBA Jam revived by EA SPORTS is a boon to the game - excessive sports games were inexplicably outdated a long time ago, and sadly, we no longer have basketball games where everything is exaggerated, turbo speed is the norm, heads are huge, and gravity is just a hint. If you are a basketball fan, I definitely recommend you play NBA JAM by EA SPORTS™. The game is similar to its console version with thundering monster crashes, rainbow three-pointers, and sweet alley-oops. There's even a classic jam announcer, Tim Kitzrow, who punctuates each game with familiar trademark phrases like "Boomshakalaka" and "He's on fire". Bottom line, you need this right now.

 

NBA Jam plays out almost exactly like last year's game and the previous editions of this historic team. You pick one of 30 NBA teams and take the court for some 2-on-2 arcade games of anything. Fouls are non-existent, so you can push opposing players to the hardwood at will, steal the ball and feed it to the open man who will jump 20 feet into the air and jam the Statue of Liberty. Hit three shots in a row and you'll catch fire and almost everything will go through the hoop. It's a fast-paced, intense, and fun experience.

 

You can access any game through the immediate play mode, or you can try the classic campaign and try to beat every team in the league. Classic NBAJ m offers an extremely open style of basketball, including outrageous trapeze dunks, giant caps, a variety of dribbling tricks, huge aerial catches, and even the ability to knock down players. EA does a great job of this, and it runs very smoothly. The game feels fast-paced and completely open to do whatever you want. With the freedom from NBA rules and the limitations of gravity, the game is free-flowing and absolutely fun. Use the arrow keys to easily control the game, and the three action buttons act as sliders to turbo-charge and add to your dunks or caps.

 

Coming to grips with the controls of NBA JAM is like learning how to ride a bike for the first time - the basic theory is easy to understand, but learning to execute it takes a few attempts. Whether you play with a 'dpad' or 'gesture-based system, you'll be using the left analog stick to run around while the right hand manages the use of your Turbo, Shoot/Block and Pass/Steal buttons. Pulling off insane stunts like super dunks and mind-blowing alley-oops is easy enough once you learn how to slide from the turbo into a shot, but putting up a defense in the form of stealing or shoving can be a real crap-shoot as the AI players react with an (understandably) inhuman level of speed to your actions.

 

If you've experienced NBA JAM, you know the style of play and I can say without a doubt that it is a perfect presentation and EA deserves praise. If you've never heard of this game, it's arcade basketball, and it's equally amazing to play and watch. The game is always telling and there is never a dull moment on offense or defense as you hit the speed button and give it you're all. And it has a beautifully designed gym with the original feel. I think it's a great sports game and a must buy for $4.99!
